How to Add a Telegram Bot to Groups & Channels
Quick Summary (TL;DR):
- Goal: Add your connected bot to a Telegram group or public/private channel to broadcast messages, welcome members, or moderate chats.
- Time to set up: ~3 minutes.
- Key Requirement: Administrator rights inside the group or channel.

The Challenge: Why bot setup in groups and channels is confusing
Adding a bot to a Telegram group or channel often leads to confusion because:
- Privacy Mode: By default, Telegram bots cannot see messages sent by other group members. They only see commands starting with a slash (
/). - Missing Admin Rights: A bot cannot post messages in a Channel at all unless it is explicitly promoted to an Administrator.
- Permission Overrides: If a bot doesn't have the "Pin Messages" or "Invite Users" permission active, visual scenarios that use these actions will fail.
Using this guide, you will learn how to configure your bot's membership settings and verify its permissions in under three minutes.
Want the bot to remove spam, links and swearing?
Use Group Moderation — rules, penalties and a journal in your bot's settings, no scenario needed. Its Add to group button asks Telegram for the right admin rights automatically.
Step-by-Step Configuration Guide
Follow these steps to add your bot to a Telegram group or channel:
Step 1: Add the Bot to your Community
- Open the Telegram app.
- In the search bar, type your bot's exact username (e.g.,
@MyFirstStoreBot). - Click on the bot's profile picture to open its Info page.
- Click on the More button (triple dots
...oroptions) and choose:- Add to Group or Add to Channel.
- Select the group or channel you want to add the bot to.
Step 2: Promote the Bot to Administrator
To function properly, the bot must be an admin:
- Open your group or channel.
- Go to the group/channel settings page (click on the community name at the top ➔ click Edit in the top right).
- Select Administrators ➔ click Add Admin.
- Search for your bot's username and select it.
Step 3: Configure Administrator Permissions
When promoting the bot, Telegram will present a list of permissions. Activate the following settings based on your needs:
For Channels:
- Post Messages: (Mandatory) Allows the bot to send updates or broadcasts.
- Edit Messages of Others: (Optional) Allows editing previous bot posts.
- Manage Stories: (Optional) If your channel publishes stories.
For Groups:
- Delete Messages: (Highly Recommended) Necessary if the bot moderates spam or cleans up user commands.
- Ban Users: Necessary if you build membership subscription gates (removing users who haven't paid).
- Pin Messages: Necessary if you want the bot to pin announcements dynamically.
- Invite Users via Link: Necessary if the bot generates single-use chat invitation links.
Click Save (or the checkmark) to apply these administrator settings.
Step 4: Build a Scenario That Works in Groups
Once your bot is promoted to administrator, users can trigger its scenarios inside the group:
- Open the scenario editor.
- The Start Node activates on
/startor the first message to the bot. In a group, users trigger it by messaging the bot directly (not in the group chat). - To respond to group messages, make sure Privacy Mode is disabled (see FAQ below) — then the bot receives all messages and can route them through your scenario.
- Connect a Message Node to the Start node with your group response:
Hello! Here are the rules for this group...
- Click Publish.
- Test by sending
/startto the bot in a private chat, or by messaging the bot directly in the group.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Why isn't my bot responding to messages in the group?
A: This is usually caused by Telegram's Privacy Mode. If Privacy Mode is enabled (which is the default state), the bot only sees messages that start with a slash / or replies directly addressed to the bot. To disable Privacy Mode:
- Open
@BotFatherand send the command/setprivacy. - Select your bot.
- Choose Disable. (This allows the bot to read all group messages, enabling keyword detection and natural conversations).
Q: How do I find the numeric ID of my channel or group?
A: Telegram IDs for groups and channels are necessary when using external webhook triggers or sending broadcast messages. Check out our detailed guide on How to get a Group or Channel ID to locate it in 1 click.
